What you’ll do

Visitors can view a curated selection of machinima films created with the Source Filmmaker engine, while learning about the history and timeline of the medium.

About the project

I'm a film curator looking to develop new methods for exhibiting machinima for public audiences. "Machinima” is a portmanteau of machine + cinema, and refers to the art of creating real-time animation using video game engines. Machinima creators, or "machinimators," use pre-rendered character models and assets to tell a story -- leading to conversations about online culture and the transformative nature of fan works. This exhibition will explore machinima created using the Source Filmmaker engine, developed by Valve Corporation for the videogame "Team Fortress 2."

This installation will explore the history of Source Filmmaker machinima as a branch of digital arts and explain how production methods, gameplay, and community all shape the way the machinima is created and understood.
